I heard that my Slim PS3's power supply uses 30% less power than the old PS3s so that might keep it from overheating later on. Anyone know if this is true?

That YLOD repair guide is a lifesaver (and money saver unless you have $178 to pay Sony). In about 1 hour, you can repair your own yellow-light PS3 and be back in action before you know it.

You can prevent the YLOD by cleaning and repasting your PS3's heatsink. The heatsink is your Playstation's radiator, and it must be cleaned every 2-3 years. Otherwise, the thermal paste dries out and prevents the heatsink from efficiently carrying heat away from the CPU and GPU chips. Then the graphics chip separates from the motherboard and needs to be repaired... most simply via the Repair Guide mentioned here.

It is as you say it is much cheaper to find a ps3 guide to fix your problem then it is to send it to Sony. However, if a person still has their warranty they should send it to Sony.
